North Carolina CNA certification: stay active, lapse, and transfer rules

Work at least 8 hours for pay performing Nurse Aide I duties delegated and supervised by a Registered Nurse during your 24-month listing period. You file the online renewal form before your listing expires, and the RN who supervised you (or an RN with access to the employer's records) must then file the matching online Employment Verification Form within 7 calendar days; the RN signature verifies the work dates, not your competency. Private duty and sitter work do not count, but home care for a licensed facility/agency and Medicaid CAP waiver work are not treated as private duty.

Continuing educationNo continuing education requirement to renew. The 8 hours of RN-supervised paid Nurse Aide I work is the whole requirement, and there are no registry fees.

Changing soon: Credentia/NNAAP total is $140, split for retests as $40 written (or oral) / $100 skills in the Credentia candidate handbook; a newer secondary table lists $50/$90 retests, so confirm the split in CNA365 at scheduling - the $140 total is consistent everywhere.

If your North Carolina certification has lapsed

The cheaper route — while it lasts

If you are still within your listing period but cannot reach the 8 hours, NC lets you retest instead: submit the training waiver application (registry guidance: at least 45 days, and up to 90 days, before your listing expiration date) and pass the Credentia competency exam before your listing expires, with no additional training.

Past that line

If you do not perform at least 8 hours of qualified work during any 24-month period, NCDHHS requires new state-approved Nurse Aide I training and competency testing to be listed again. Community colleges offer Nurse Aide I refresher courses for formerly listed aides, which is the usual retraining route.

Both forms must be in before expiration and the registry does not promise a reminder; if the RN misses the 7-day verification window you both start again. Renewal is for 24 months from the last qualified work date reported, and expiration dates fall at the end of the month. Exam attempts: pass both parts within 24 months of training or 3 attempts, whichever comes first.

Transferring INTO North Carolina

Application fee: $0. Two primary-source routes on the NCDHHS registry page: (1) Reciprocity - completed a state-approved training program, passed competency testing, listed on another state's registry in unexpired good standing with no pending/substantiated findings, AND employed as a nurse aide for pay for at least 8 hours performing RN-delegated/supervised nursing tasks in the previous 24 consecutive months. Out-of-state private duty employment does not qualify. (2) Training Waiver - completed a state-approved nurse aide training program in another state within the last 24 months and currently listed unexpired/in good standing; this route can lead to NC competency testing. NCDHHS FAQ states there are no registry fees. Work-history requirement: At least 8 hours of paid, RN-supervised nurse aide work in the previous 24 consecutive months (reciprocity route). Fee conflict flagged: the DHHS primary FAQ says 'There are no registry fees,' so endorsement is listed as $0; one secondary fee table lists NC at $188, which appears to bundle the competency exam charged on the training-waiver/testing route rather than a reciprocity fee. Verify the route you qualify under before assuming a cost.

The table below is computed for an active aide in good standing, trained to the origin state's standard hours. Your own hours or status can change your row — run the transfer checker with your real facts.
