Wyoming CNA certification: stay active, lapse, and transfer rules

All CNA certificates expire on December 31 of even-numbered years, no matter when issued, and renewal runs October 1 to December 31 of that year in the Nurse Portal. Competency for renewal is a menu, not a single work rule (Board Rule § 2-13 and the Headmaster candidate handbook agree): in the past 2 years, work 400 hours as a CNA, OR work 200 hours and complete 15 hours of continuing education, OR complete 30 hours of continuing education, OR pass the NATCEP competency exam. There is no grace period. One conflict to know about: WSBN's live renewal page currently prints a different menu (400 hours, OR 40 hours of CE, OR pass the exam) — the Board's rule and its own renewal page disagree, so confirm which menu applies to you with WSBN at (307) 777-7601 before your renewal window opens.

Is my certification still active?

If you have never worked for pay since certifying, use your certification date.

Checked in part: most of Wyoming's rules were confirmed on primary sources on October 22, 2026, but a few details could only be confirmed in part. Where a figure is marked "not published," use the registry link on this page to confirm — we would rather show you the gap than fill it with a guess.

Keep-active work ruleAll CNA certificates expire on December 31 of even-numbered years, no matter when issued, and renewal runs October 1 to December 31 of that year in the Nurse Portal. Continuing educationContinuing education is not a standalone requirement in Wyoming: it is one route on the renewal competency menu — 15 hours alongside 200 work hours, or 30 hours alone (Board Rule § 2-13). WSBN's live renewal page currently prints 40 hours for the CE-alone route; the rule and the page conflict (see the work rule).
Who reports your workYou do — nobody files it for you

If your Wyoming certification has lapsed

The cheaper route — while it lasts

If you miss the December 31 deadline your certificate lapses on January 1 and you may not practice. To return you file a recertification application and the $60 recertification fee, submit fingerprint background check cards and fees, and show current competency under the Board's routes (see the work rule).

Past that line

If you cannot show qualifying practice inside the Board's five-year lookback — no 400 hours of CNA work (or 200 hours plus 15 CE hours) in the last 5 years — you must complete an approved CNA training and competency program again, OR pass the NATCEP competency exam again (Rule § 2-13(e)(ii); Headmaster Wyoming Candidate Handbook).

Trap: because every certificate in the state expires on the same day, a CNA first certified in an odd year - or late in an even year - can face renewal within months of getting certified, and must still meet a competency route. Authority is split: WSBN issues the certification, while the Department of Health operates the federal CNA registry lookup, so the two records should agree but live in different systems. Some training programs in Wyoming run 105 hours even though the state minimum is 75.

Transferring INTO Wyoming

Application fee: $60 · typical processing: About 4 to 6 weeks per secondary reports; WSBN does not publish a processing promise on the pages reviewed.. Certification by endorsement costs the same $60 application fee as examination, plus the $60 DCI fingerprint background check fee (plus FBI processing). You must hold active certification in good standing on another state's registry with at least 75 hours of training and a CMS-compliant competency exam, submit license verification and fingerprints, and meet the Board's competency evidence rules. Work-history requirement: Board rules for endorsement competency have required evidence of at least 16 hours of nurse aide employment plus in-service/CE evidence in the prior 2 years (older rule text); confirm current competency evidence in the Nurse Portal when applying..

The table below is computed for an active aide in good standing, trained to the origin state's standard hours. Your own hours or status can change your row — run the transfer checker with your real facts.
