Utah CNA certification: stay active, lapse, and transfer rules

UNAR processes your renewal only if you performed at least 200 hours of paid nursing or nursing-related services under the direction of a licensed nurse during the 24 months following training completion or your last renewal (Utah Admin. Code R432-45-6(3)). A licensed nurse signs Section 1 of the renewal form to confirm the hours and you sign Section 2; use one signed form per employer if no single employer covers all 200 hours. Volunteer work, nursing-school clinical hours, and out-of-country missionary work do not count; qualifying work in another state can count if you hold active certification in good standing there.

Continuing educationNo state CE requirement for basic CNA renewal when the 200-hour work requirement is met; employers must still provide 12 hours of in-service training annually under federal standards.

If your Utah certification has lapsed

The cheaper route — while it lasts

Expired less than 6 months, with all requirements met before expiry: reinstate for the remainder of the original term by paying UNAR's $40 late fee (Utah Admin. Code R432-45-3(7)). Expired less than 24 months — or simply short of the 200 hours: a NATCEP waiver plus retesting only — 3 attempts to pass both portions within 2 years of the expiry date (R432-45-3(4)).

Past that line

Expired 24 months or more: waiver eligibility ends — you must complete a new UNAR-approved training program (NATCEP) and pass both examinations again (R432-45-3). Out-of-state aides whose certification has expired face the same wall: expired out-of-state certification is not eligible for reciprocity in Utah.

Utah's 200 paid hours every 24 months is one of the strictest renewal rules in the country — roughly 25 eight-hour shifts, not one shift. The signed renewal form must reach UNAR before your expiration date; forms appear in your TMU account 90 days ahead and reminders go out at 90, 60, and 30 days. Testing runs on the Headmaster TMU platform, but the exam and registry are state-run through UNAR itself, not an outside vendor contract like Credentia or Prometric states.

Transferring INTO Utah

Application fee: $50 · typical processing: About 2 to 4 weeks per secondary sources.. Must hold active certification in good standing in another state with no substantiated findings, and complete Utah BCI and FBI fingerprint background checks. Apply with the UNAR reciprocity application plus photo ID, Social Security card, and proof of active out-of-state certification or qualifying employment. UNAR publishes the reciprocity fee itself: $50 (UNAR fee table, read October 22, 2026). Secondary guides quoting $30 are stale.

The table below is computed for an active aide in good standing, trained to the origin state's standard hours. Your own hours or status can change your row — run the transfer checker with your real facts.
