Nevada CNA certification: stay active, lapse, and transfer rules

To renew you must, in the 24 months before renewal, have worked at least 40 hours of paid nursing assistant work under the direct supervision of an RN or LPN AND completed 24 hours of continuing training. You attest to both in the Nevada Nurse Portal renewal; if audited, your employer confirms the 40 hours on Board letterhead form/letter. Your certificate expires on your birthday every two years (the first period runs only to your second birthday after issue, so it can be shorter than 24 months).

If you have never worked for pay since certifying, use your certification date.

Continuing education24 hours of continuing training every two years (NAC 632.193). Confirm completion in the renewal application and keep certificates for four years in case of audit. Older Board guidance specifies at least 12 of the 24 hours through a Nevada-licensed/certified facility or approved provider.
Who reports your workYou do — nobody files it for you

Changing soon: Vendor change: Headmaster took over Nevada nurse aide testing on July 1, 2026 (Credentia before). Exam fees under Headmaster are $75 knowledge + $90 skills = $165, up from the Credentia-era $50 + $90 = $140 still shown in many guides.

If your Nevada certification has lapsed

The cheaper route — while it lasts

You can renew from 60 days before expiration in the Nurse Portal. Nevada has no grace period: you cannot work as a CNA after the expiration date until renewal is issued, but you can still renew late if you meet the work and CE requirements.

Past that line

If you did not meet the renewal work/CE requirements, reinstatement requires choosing retrain or retest in the portal: pass both exams within one year of the renewal/reinstatement application (fingerprinting may also be required), or complete a state-approved training program again. If you miss the one-year deadline or fail, you must complete a new program before reapplying.

Separate $50 Board certificate application fee applies at initial certification and endorsement, on top of exam fees, plus fingerprint costs. A permanent certificate is not issued until DPS/FBI fingerprint reports clear, which can take up to four months.

Transferring INTO Nevada

Application fee: $50 · typical processing: Application is valid for one year from receipt by the Board. NSBN CNA by Endorsement: online application via Nevada Nurse Portal with $50 fee; copy of active out-of-state certificate showing expiration date; copy of state-approved training certificate meeting OBRA requirements (or transcript showing nursing fundamentals); proof of 8 hours of employment as a CNA in a licensed medical facility within the past two years (pay stub, W-2, or employer letter); endorsement form(s) from the first state where you were certified, sent by that state directly to NSBN; fingerprints. A temporary certificate (6 months, non-renewable) may be issued once all documents are in while fingerprints clear. Work-history requirement: Proof of 8 hours of CNA employment in a licensed medical facility within the past two years. Endorsement fee is $50 plus fingerprint fees (not included).

The table below is computed for an active aide in good standing, trained to the origin state's standard hours. Your own hours or status can change your row — run the transfer checker with your real facts.
