Connecticut CNA certification: stay active, lapse, and transfer rules

To renew, you must have worked at least one 8-hour shift of paid employment as a nurse aide, or in a position providing nursing-related / direct personal care services, before your certificate expires. Your EMPLOYER must complete and submit the Employment Verification Form to the registry (fax, email or mail) - you cannot self-report. There is no renewal fee. Renewals are effective 2 years from the last date of reported/verified employment (CT DPH).

If you have never worked for pay since certifying, use your certification date.

If your Connecticut certification has lapsed

The cheaper route — while it lasts

Retest-only, no retraining required if prior training can be verified: apply to Prometric under Route 4 - Lapsed Nurse Aide and pass both the written and clinical skills exams again ($118 for skills + written, $128 for skills + oral). If prior training cannot be verified, complete a DPH-approved training program first.

Past that line

If you expired but DID work qualifying hours before expiry and the form was simply never filed, you may still submit an Employment Verification Form for each 2-year cycle since expiration and renew free - no exam. If you have not worked in a period longer than 24 months, see the retest route below. Connecticut sets no separate short retest-only window - the retest route below is the standard comeback at any lapse length.

Employer-only reporting is the trap: a CNA who worked the hours but whose employer never filed the form looks lapsed. Fix that with back-cycle verification forms before paying for Route 4. Exam fee $118 is stated on CT DPH Route 1 page; the $45 written / $73 skills figures are the Prometric retake splits that sum to $118. Unlimited exam attempts within the 24 months after training for new candidates.

Transferring INTO Connecticut

Application fee: $55. Route 7 - Reciprocity through Prometric: active CNA certification in good standing in another U.S. state or territory, no abuse/neglect/misappropriation findings. Fee $55. Route 3 is different: out-of-state TRAINING (at least 100 hours, within past 24 months) without certification - that route must still take the Connecticut exam.

The table below is computed for an active aide in good standing, trained to the origin state's standard hours. Your own hours or status can change your row — run the transfer checker with your real facts.
